Active Hedge Fund Data Buyer Index
Explore a free, curated cohort of 50 hedge funds selected based on sustained evidence of participation in sourcing traditional or alternative data.
The Active Hedge Fund Data Buyer Index is a defined cohort of 50 hedge funds that have consistently demonstrated credible evidence of sourcing, evaluating, engineering, or using external data. That evidence may include dedicated data-sourcing or evaluation functions, recurring data-related hiring, investment in relevant engineering infrastructure, public discussion of data strategy, participation in the data community, or directly verified market activity.
This Index is designed as an orientation and market-mapping resource: a focused starting cohort for understanding which hedge funds have developed meaningful organizational capabilities around external data.
The Index is not a ranking by data spend, confirmation of a current purchasing mandate, a complete list of all hedge fund data buyers, a directory of private contacts, or an invitation for indiscriminate outreach.
What “Active Data Buyer” Means
This Index is an editorially defined cohort, but not a ranking of data spend, procurement volume, willingness to engage with vendors, or commercial opportunity. An organization may be included when multiple signals suggest that external data is a sustained part of its research or investment infrastructure. Those signals may include:
- dedicated data-sourcing, evaluation, or alternative-data roles
- recurring data-related hiring
- investment in data engineering, research, legal, compliance, or procurement capabilities
- public discussion of external-data strategy or usage
- participation in institutional data-market events or communities
- evidence of data usage across multiple categories or workflows
- permissioned or directly verified participation in the data market
- sustained activity over time
The criteria are applied editorially rather than through a single quantitative threshold, and the cohort may change as organizations, teams, and data strategies evolve. No single job posting, conference appearance, press mention, historical quote, or vendor relationship is treated as definitive proof.

The concentration among quantitative, quantamental, and multi-strategy firms is not surprising. These organizations are more likely to maintain the engineering, legal, compliance, procurement, and research infrastructure required to evaluate external data repeatedly. The more interesting point is that the Index also includes event-driven, macro, credit, fundamental, and credit-focused approaches. Institutional data buying is broader than the stereotypical quant fund.
